Jean Boghossian returns to Mark Hachem Gallery in Paris for his second solo exhibition with the gallery, presenting an evocative chapter in his acclaimed Wave series, which was born as an unintentional homage to Hokusai. Titled Tides of Fire, the exhibition focuses on a singular variation within the series: Volcano. Boghossian, known for his innovative use of fire as both a tool and symbol in his artistic practice, explores the immense, untamed force of a volcanic eruption in this body of work.
In the Volcano series, he merges the concepts of wave and eruption to capture nature in motion, symbolizing the beauty and power of forces beyond human control. The series arose from Boghossian’s organic creative process, where his use of diverse materials—collages, paints, burnings, and plaster—led to the spontaneous emergence of a wave-like form, but not of water: of molten lava. These fiery waves surge with unstoppable energy, evoking moments of upheaval in which nature rises to engulf its surroundings. Yet, within this intensity, Boghossian also suggests the possibility of renewal—a recurring theme in his work.
